Our assessment

Fathom Analytics takes a fundamentally different approach to web analytics. It collects no personal data, sets no cookies, and does not track individual users. This means it falls outside the scope of GDPR consent requirements for analytics — you can run Fathom without a cookie banner for analytics purposes, which eliminates one of the most common friction points in EU compliance.

The practical implication is significant. Sites using Google Analytics must obtain consent before firing the tracking script, which means a portion of traffic goes unmeasured (consent rates vary, but 30-60% opt-out rates are common in the EU). Fathom measures all traffic by default because there is nothing to consent to. Your traffic numbers will be higher and more accurate than GA4's consented subset.

The EU isolation feature routes all data processing through EU-based infrastructure managed by Hetzner in Germany. This is a genuine data residency option, not just a CDN edge node. For organisations with strict data sovereignty requirements, this matters.

The limitation is analytical depth. Fathom gives you pageviews, referrers, top pages, UTM tracking, and custom events. It does not give you user-level analytics, session recordings, conversion funnels, or the event-driven analysis that GA4 enables. If you need to understand individual user journeys or build audience segments for remarketing, Fathom is not the right tool. If you need clean traffic data without consent complexity, it is the best option available.
